Cleveland Browns’ President Mike Holmgren: Is this his season to prove he belongs here?
Since His arrival at the end of the season in 2009 Mike Holmgren has made it clear he has a plan. The first step was to completely restructure the organization top to bottom, clear the roster of dead weight, and bring a winning tradition back to the Cleveland Browns franchise. But entering his third full season as team President, Mike Holmgren now finds himself on the hot-seat.
Mike Holmgren has a long history of a winning tradition. He had coached with the 49ers, Packers, and Seahawks. His greatest achievements were the Packers Super Bowl XXXI victory and his complete remodeling of a Seattle football franchise that had never really been relevant prior to his arrival.
But Holmgren’s time in Cleveland to this point has been tough. The club has posted a total of 9 wins in his first two seasons and has recently brought about yet another QB controversy in Cleveland due to his handling of Colt McCoy this offseason. He had also released former head Coach Eric Mangini after just his second season. This upset many Browns fans and players because Mangini had not yet been given a fair chance to prove himself, and the team had really begun to responded to his coaching style in the closing weeks of the 2010 season.
But by all accounts everything that Holmgren envisioned in his plans are now in place. He helped to hire the team’s General Manager Tom Heckert who to this point has produced some excellent draft classes. Holmgren has also cleared the roster of players that did not fit his vision, and the coaching staff has been hand-picked.
Everything is now in place. There are no more excuses and this is the season where it is time to “put-up or shut-up”. Holmgren has helped to mold this team including the selection of the Browns next franchise QB in Brandon Weeden. So failure is not an option.
But what will be a successful season? This team has the third toughest schedule in the NFL this season and when you are starting a rookie QB the odds are not in your favor. Will success be measured in effort, competitive games, or wins? This is a team and a city starving for a winning season. The fans have had only two of them since the team’s return in 1999. So is this the year we find out if Holmgren is the answer?
What do you think justifies a successful season?
