Cleveland Browns head coach Pat Shurmur shows signs of life.
Coach Pat Shurmur is not what you could call an entertaining figure in the world of Cleveland sports. In fact "at times" he can be rather boring. Sometimes you may even need to use a strobe light to give the illusion he is animated. But this week, coach Shurmur has displayed an original thought by hinting at a possibly of naming his starting QB prior to the upcoming training camp. This is not only a sign of life from the 47-year-old head coach, but it is possibly the smartest decision that he has made so far in his 12 year NFL coaching career.
The situation at quarterback for the Cleveland Browns has been in constant transition since the team’s return in 1999. Sixteen starting quarterbacks have taken snaps under center since then, many of which were thrust into quarterback competitions that usually did more harm than good. This offseason has been no different as the Browns have once again found themselves running a horse-race at QB.
The truly sad part about the competition this time has less to do with two quarterbacks battling for the top slot on the depth chart and more to do with the organization's complete mishandling of the future of incumbent starter Colt McCoy.
It was one thing to publicly seek a draft trade months in advance to move up for Robert Griffin III, inquire about trading for Sam Bradford or even the drafting of quarterback Brandon Weeden. But to do all this while publically claiming to have faith in the current starter McCoy is a transparent lie which insults the team, the players and the fans. It has done nothing but created a manufactured QB controversy in which everyone knows who the winner will be well in advance. I would compare this to the soap opera better known as professional wrestling, but at least wrestling can give the illusion of actually being real.
Having given the appropriate back-story, enter stage right Browns head coach Pat Shurmur and his comments made Wednesday. Shurmur made reference to the Browns starting quarterback situation to be similar to the one he had as offensive coordinator in St. Louis."At the beginning of training camp, we named Sam (Bradford) the starter," Shurmur said,. "He had a pretty good year his first year."
If Shurmur "officially" names Brandon Weeden the starting Quarterback earlier rather than later, it would put to bed the added distraction caused by the transparent farce currently in play. It is easily the best thing that Shurmur can do for his team outside of channeling the spirit of Paul Brown while pacing the sidelines.
If Shurmur acts quickly, then Weeden and the Browns receiver corps can spend the remainder of this offseason schedule working on their timing and chemistry which are critical in the west coast offense. Perhaps Shurmur can lead this team after all.
