Mangini press conf. transcript - 11/28

The transcript of Eric Mangini's post game press conference following the team's 24-23 victory over the Carolina Panthers.

CLEVELAND BROWNS COACH ERIC MANGINI
(Opening Statement)- “Good evening everybody.  Before we get started, I just wanted to thank one of our friends that was able to come out today, a little boy named Ryan (Trewin), you might have seen him at the coin toss.  He’s going through a difficult time right now, he’s just a special guy and we really are pulling for him as a team.  He’s just a really special little boy, so I just wanted to mention that.  In terms of the game, there are obviously a lot of things that we need to do better.  I thought we played really well offensively early on.  The no huddle and the rhythm and things like that helped us quite a bit.  The turnovers were an issue, we had the one going in on the fumble and the interception that we had.  I thought the defense did a nice job at the start of the second half, being able to hold them out there and then the turnover which translated into a touchdown and kind of changed the complexion of the game at that point.  In terms of what we need to do defensively, I don’t think we did a very good job of tacking today.  I don’t think we did a very good job of setting the edge in the running game and that’s got to improve.  That’s something that we’ve been good at and we are going to be good at that that again.  It’s got to get better, this week it’s going to get better.  It has to.  Wins come in a lot of different ways and I’m definitely happy for all of the guys that we were able to win the game.  I give Carolina a lot of credit, they’ve fought through a lot of adversity this season and they kept fighting throughout the course of the game.  I know that’s the way John (Fox) coaches and the way that they play, so I give them a lot of credit.”
(On if he thought that the time should have ran out after Brandon LaFell’s catch)- “When I was talking to the official on my sideline Tony (Grossi), he said that if it was a catch and it was in bounds, then the game would be over.  If it wasn’t a catch, it would go back to the previous spot with, whatever it was, five seconds left.  That was the impression I was under going into the replay.  Coming out of the replay, that’s not what happened.  But we should have done a better job before that of not letting that happen.  I’m disappointed that we did, we shouldn’t have put ourselves in that position.  There’s a better call that we could have made and I should have made sure that we did make it and not put ourselves in that position.”
(On some coaches preferring to call a timeout or not call a timeout before a final field goal attempt and why he did not call a timeout before the final field goal attempt by Carolina)- “I guess because of what exactly what you’re saying, it goes either way.  He had missed the one early in the start of the second half and I just wanted him to have the one shot at it and see what happened.”
(On what went through his mind before the final field goal attempt by Carolina)- “There were too many expletives going through my mind at that point (joking).  ‘We should not be here lining up for a kick,’ is what was going through my mind.  Then we had to get over that pretty quickly and hope that we could pressure them enough to either block it or force it to go wide one way or the other.  It was just frustration that that initial play happened.  That should not happen.”
(On if he feels like they dodged a bullet today)- “I feel like it was multiple bullets, it was machine gun fire because we dodged a few of those things.  I want to see us improve each week and the one thing that I am happy about is in making the mistakes that we made, to be able to come out on the plus side of that, that’s a good thing.  I don’t want to make those mistakes, I don’t want us to make those mistakes to put ourselves in a position where it has got to come down to a kick with five seconds left.”
(On if he ever thought about making a change at quarterback after Jake Delhomme’s second interception)- “Not really at that point Jeff (Schudel), I wanted to see how it was going to go the rest of the game.  I wanted to let it play out a little bit more.  He had a really good first half and he moved us effectively, he got a range of different people involved.  Brian (Robiskie) had, I think, seven catches which was pretty close to his season total, so that was a positive thing.  I thought he did an excellent job.  Carolina’s defense brings a lot of different things, they create a lot of problems and he was doing an excellent job of negating those problems with the way that he was running the offense.  I give the offensive line a ton of credit, I thought they played really well today, really well today.  The tight ends, everybody who was involved with the blocking, I thought they were dialed in this week.  I thought the communication was excellent during the week of practice and it translated.  This defense causes a lot of problems and that’s one thing that I was concerned about going into the game, the range of blitzes, the volume of blitzes, Charles Johnson and the things that he can do and we had to play a certain way to be effective.  Peyton (Hillis) had a good day running the ball and they had generated a lot of negative runs leading up to this game.  I don’t think we had very many, maybe one, if that.  I’m not sure what the final stats are.  That was an important thing too.”
(On if it is tough to teach an old dog new tricks and if he is going to have to live with Jake Delhomme’s turnovers)- “No, however old the dog is, keep teaching him.  Jake knew what he did on that play right away and I think those things are correctable.  There are times to take chances and there are times to just cut your losses and move forward.”
(On the decision to go for it on fourth down and not attempt a field goal early in the fourth quarter)- “Yes, you can see how tough it was for kickers and in that range of the field with him missing two.  On fourth and one and the run that we had with Peyton, I liked our chances there.”
(On why Lawrence Vickers wasn’t in on that fourth and one situation)- “Yes, we wanted to have the formation wider as opposed to tighter to try to spread out (their defense).  It wasn’t really a perimeter run, but a wide-schemed run, so we wanted to push the outside defenders wider.  By bringing Evan (Moore) over, who typically is a receiving tight end, I thought that would push the coverage outside and create a seam there.  That’s where my thought process was there.”
(On if they were able to do more things with Jake Delhomme in the game plan than Colt McCoy because of his experience)- “Colt had been doing a great job, he really had.  We were getting to the point with him where there weren’t a lot of limitations, so I give him a lot of credit for that.  Jake does have an ability to see things that Colt can’t know right now because he’s never seen them.  He will know that stuff and he will be good at that stuff because he’s shown that he can be, but he needs some more experience to get to that point.”
(On how limited Joshua Cribbs was)- “He was pretty limited.  I give Josh a lot of credit for working all week to get to the game.  It just got to the point where he felt he was completely ineffective doing anything and we didn’t want to put him at risk.  He wanted to play, I respect that, but if he can’t protect himself then we can’t put him out there.”
(On what would he have called differently defensively on that last pass to LaFell)- “I would have layered the sideline and made him complete it inbounds and see if they could get up and clock it.  I don’t think they could have and if it was short, it would have been a long field goal.  It’s close, but it in retrospect, that’s what I would have done differently.”
(On if will call the league tomorrow and try to get a clarification on the ruling of the final replay challenge)- “What I don’t really know is what he saw on the replay.  Did he see that it was a catch and he rolled out of bounds and he wasn’t touched?  But what was conveyed to me initially was that it was a catch in bounds, (he was) touched and was ruled inbounds.  I don’t know what he saw on the replay, I was just going off that conversation so it’s hard for me to say definitively.  He saw what he saw, I’m not criticizing him, I’m just saying that’s what was conveyed, and that’s what my expectation was coming out of the replay booth.  I haven’t personally seen it so I couldn’t really tell you.”
(On Robiskie’s effectiveness today)- “In terms of the volume of catches, it could have been a function of the scheme that they were playing.  It’s hard for me to say why this spike happened right now.  Brian is a guy that’s making strides and numbers haven’t shown, but he has and it’s nice for this type of performance to happen.  I’m hoping that this is a springboard for a lot more games like this for him and for us.  Exactly what the one difference was, I couldn’t tell you right now.”
(On if the quarterback sneak from the no huddle on third and one came from the sideline)- “Yes, we wanted to go quick.  They were going to be in an even front and you just got to push and go before they have it set because if you want to sneak it and you give them time, they jam everybody up in tight.  If you get up there quickly, they’re going to have to default to their base front and you can just go.  I thought we were going to be fine on that.”
(On what he is going to do moving forward with Delhomme and the quarterback position)- “We are in another week here and I want to see where Colt is tomorrow.  He’s going to be doing some more stuff.  Jake did a lot of good things in the game and, obviously, the one thing that we can’t have is turnovers.  That’s not a secret, that’s not a private conversation between he and I, he knows that and he understands that and that’s what we need offensively.  It starts with us not having self-inflicted wounds because it just changes things.  It changes things dramatically, it changes the whole complexion of the game, it changes the way you call it, it changes the momentum, so that has to be eliminated for us to move forward.”
