Undrafted players for the Cleveland Browns could find themselves in the mix coming into 2012.
by Unknown
There are still positions on this team to be won or lost in regards to the Cleveland Browns final 53 man roster according to Browns Head Coach Pat Shurmur. This may seem like a politically “safe” statement to make as a head coach addressing the media, but I feel it was more on the point than many realize. With numerous injuries and possible suspensions on the Browns defense, and questions surrounding the offense no one who follows this team can say that this team does not need to improve. At the end of training camp a total of three undrafted rookies made the final roster cut and I expect this year to not be any different. So let us take a look at some of the undrafted free agents for the Browns that may find themselves making this team. Some of which may even get the chance to start on September 9th against the Eagles in Cleveland’s season opener.
Craig Robertson LB:
There are two linebackers who have really impressed the coaching staff and given themselves a chance to make this team and line backer Craig Robertson is one of them. There are times in which circumstances give players the opportunity to prove themselves and Robertson has taken the most of his opportunities. Fromm North Texas, Robertson has at the very least made his case as a solid rotational player in the Browns Linebacker corps. I expect him to make this team.
L.J. Fort LB:
What can you say about L.J. Fort? The product of North Iowa has stepped up. He has a firm grasp on the playbook and has done nothing but impress both in camp and the preseason games. He seems to be at the right places at the right time and despite James-Michael Johnson who was a linebacker taken by the Browns in the draft. Johnson has not shown the kind of effort that both Robertson and Fort have shown week in and week out.
Ronnie Cameron DT:
Ronnie Cameron is a new addition of the Cleveland Browns this past week. He was released by the Chicago Bears and had numerous suitors. 5 teams including the NFC East Champion New York Giants attempted to gain Cameron off waivers but the Browns were awarded him based on their 2011 record. Although Cameron had been in camp less than a week he was impressive against the Packers in limited action participating and helping the defense secure a safety. I truly believe he will be on the final 53 man roster especially the thin depth at DT. He could develop into a fine player as he is brought up to speed in Dick Jauron’s defensive scheme.
Josh Cooper WR:
Although Cooper has had limited action in game situations he has been consistent in camp. Coming out of Oklahoma State with teammate and starting QB Brandon Weeden he showed in college his talent as a possession receiver. I would not be surprised if he makes the final cut on the simple “uncertainly” surrounding Mo Massaquoi’s health and Josh Gordon’s progression as a pro.
So there you have it. These are four fresh faces I expect to see around Berea as this season gets started. The real question however is, who loses their jobs to make room for these guys?
What do you think?
