Browns targeting Matt Flynn in Free Agency?
by Unknown
Will the Cleveland Browns pursue Matt Flynn of the Green Bay Packers in free agency? Now that the Packers have not placed the franchise tag on Flynn he will enter free agency on March 13, should the Browns feel the need to replace Colt McCoy this is another option other than the draft to acquire what many consider a much needed addition--a quarterback.Flynn, considered by many to be the front-runner ( quarterback ) in free agency would come at a steep price, reported to be as high as $40 million for a multi-year contract, however the Browns would be able to use their "much needed" draft picks to fill other needs.
One would expect Flynn to be on the Browns radar for numerous reasons, one being that he is familiar with the Browns version of the West Coast Offense--Browns team president Mike Holmgren was the Packers head coach from 1992-1998. Yes, his performance last season against the Detroit Lions, where he threw for six touchdowns was impressive--but was it $40 million impressive?
Flynn, after being drafted in 2008 in the seventh-round has sat behind Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers and started only two games in four years. Although his performance in both games that he started can be considered impressive one must also remember that he was a member of what many consider an elite offensive unit--a phrase rarely used when speaking of the Browns offense.
Although the Browns would retain all of their draft picks by making a run for Flynn in free agency, it is believed that they would also be in a bidding war with the Miami Dolphins and Seattle Seahawks which could keep driving the price up for an unproven commodity!
Flynn, in his two starts has been impressive and would allow the Browns to use those valuable draft picks elsewhere, however the price is to high for an unproven quarterback who may or may not be little more than competition for McCoy--competition that may result in him sitting behind McCoy! I would laugh my ass off .They pay top dollar for Flynn and MC coy beats him in contest. Then goes on to a playoff season. You have to remember MCcoy is still a developing QB.I say trade Wallace Get a good back up
and give MC coy a couple seasons to develop.SHOW SOME FAITH AND SUPPORT MCCOY

Nothing against Flynn--however given his experience (2 games) and with an elite offense to work with--I just do not see how one can justify that expense on an unproven commodity. A commodity that may or may not be any kind of improvement--yes, it would be funny. Fans are to quick to "throw the baby our with the wash"---give McCoy some time and tools to work with and then evaluate him!

and they bring Wallace in didn't we see the same plays and same results. Poor coaches call poor plays so sorry folks we are stuck for a long time with no chance of getting much better.

Very good point--coaching! I understand the need for a QB to be effective under center, however Shurmur numerous times refused to play to McCoys strenghts. Anyone who followed Colt knows his effectiveness from the shotgun--which in comparison was used very little
