Browns make an offer to Matt Flynn, Peyton Hillis to Steelers or Chiefs?

The Cleveland Browns, usually somewhat silent in free agency were quick with a contract offer to free agent quarterback Matt Flynn. The South Florida Sun-Sentinel reported that the Browns wasted no time approaching Flynn, along with the Miami Dolphins, in an attempt to replace Browns quarterback Colt McCoy.

General Manager Tom Heckert of the Browns has stated Cleveland would probably not seek to sign a big-name quarterback in free agency, this may have been a "smoke screen". Flynn will no doubt command a rather large salary, however he is well versed in the West Coast Offense and has sat behind Aaron Rodgers for four years. Although he is a front-runner in free agency, Flynn has only started two games in those four years, they were impressive-- however do they warrant spending that kind of cash on an unproven commodity?

Signing Flynn to a long term contract at such a high cost (reported by many to be as high as 40 million) would imply that the Browns feel that Flynn is starting material, a "plug and play" quarterback to replace McCoy as starter. This move could also have an effect on the future of Seneca Wallace, back-up to McCoy--McCoy is much cheaper as a back-up than Wallace.

Signing Flynn may not be an easy task for the Browns given the interest by the Dolphins. Coach Joe Philbin of the Dolphins was offensive coordinator of the Packers and very familiar with Flynn, however the Dolphins interest in Peyton Manning could increase the chances of Flynn landing in Cleveland.

Browns that have entered free agency:

Peyton Hillis tops the list of unrestricted free agents the Browns have hitting the market and reports have already surfaced of him speaking with the Pittsburgh Steelers and being scheduled to visit the Kansas City Chiefs. Others that have entered free agency are corner-back Dimitri Patterson, punter Brad Maynard, offensive linemen Steve Vallos, Artis Hicks and Oniel Cousins along with free-safety Mike Adams. These players are free to sign with anyone they choose--however the Browns can still try to re-sign them.

The lose of Peyton Hillis, if he signs elsewhere would be an impact on the Browns offense while the signing of Matt Flynn would be a huge gamble--it will be interesting to see how the Browns address this situation, drop a somewhat proven commodity and pick-up a high priced unproven commodity!

UPDATE: After breaking the news of the Browns interest in Flynn in her article--Report: Cleveland Browns making offer for Packers backup QB Matt Flynn-Mary Kay Cabot of the Cleveland Plain Dealer has now tweeted:
