Browns talk to St. Louis Rams about Robert Griffin III
by Unknown
The continuing speculation of the Cleveland Browns trading up to pick Robert Griffin III in this years NFL Draft is nonstop and building momentum. Reports from Mary Kay Cabot, Browns beat writer for the Plain Dealer are stating that the Browns have indeed had preliminary talks with the St. Louis Rams about moving up to the No. 2 spot in order to grab Griffin III.Reports or speculation that the Rams are seeking three No. 1 picks in exchange for a shot at Griffin III, if true, would seem to be a "kings ransom" for an unproven commodity such as Griffin III. Given Browns president Mike Holmgrens track record of seeking quarterbacks in the latter rounds along with General Manager Tom Heckerts thirst for stockpiling much needed picks it is doubtful that the Browns are willing to make such a trade.
The Rams, sitting in the drivers seat, will surely hold firm on their demands with the possibility of The Washington Redskins and Miami Dolphins being in the mix of a bidding war, a war the Browns cannot afford to participate in.
The Browns, Dolphins and Redskins can eliminate themselves from the Griffin III drama by picking up a quarterback in free agency such as Matt Flynn of the Green Bay Packers, or possibly Peyton Manning, whos' situation with the Indianapolis Colts seem to change daily. Regardless of any team removing themselves from the Griffin III lottery, the price the Rams will demand will be steep, too elaborate for a team in rebuilding mode--such as the Browns.
If in fact the Browns have spoken with the Rams about moving up to the No. 2 spot it merely means they were seeking information about the cost, not that they are ready to mortgage the stadium to acquire Griffin III.
If the Browns truly are seeking to add another quarterback to the roster there is free agency along with other quarterbacks not named Andrew Luck or Griffin III in the draft--if not, stick with Colt McCoy and use the picks to add impact players at other key positions!
