Cleveland Browns: Should the Browns Pursue Plaxico Burress?

When a conversation about the Cleveland Browns is focused on improvements, the need for a high-profile wide receiver will definitely become the main focus.

Many views and opinions are expressed regarding whether to draft, or seek to fill the position via free agency, causing numerous players to be mentioned, both college and those already playing in the NFL.

One name seldom heard in any discussion about a wide receiver for the Browns is Plaxico Burress, his being in prison in upstate New York may have something to do with that. Burress suffered a gunshot wound, shooting himself in the thigh while at a nightclub in New York City--Police and Judges frown on such behavior.

Scheduled to be released from prison in June of 2011, Burress will be looking for a job, provided that his previous employer, the New York Giants do not pick him up.

If available, should the Browns attempt to sign Burress?

In his 9 year career, Burress has had 505 receptions for 7,845 yards, 55 touchdowns along with only 9 fumbles. Although these statistics may be somewhat impressive, Burress has issues that make him less desirable.

Burress has a history of injuries, other than shooting himself in the thigh, he has been plagued with ankle sprains--sound familiar--along with leg injuries.

Burress has also shown what many would consider a poor attitude. In 2008, he was fined for inappropriate comments regarding officiating, verbal abuse of a head linesman, and tossing a football into the stands.

With his history of injuries Burress can still be considered a talented receiver, which the Giants may want on their roster, and being locked-up does have a tendency to change an individual.

The Browns will be attempting to make improvements in their offense, seeking individuals who can make an impact at numerous positions.

If available, should the Browns give serious thought to signing Burress?

Given his talent,  possible improvements to his attitude, and a new home--can Burress re-kindle his career and "shoot his way to the top?"
