Cleveland Browns RB Trent Richardson will be ready for week one action!
by Unknown
On Wednesday, it appeared that the ghosts of Lake Erie were going to quickly snuff out the fire of excitement that has been burning during this offseason for the fans of the Cleveland Browns. It had become clear that through a team press release and reports from the Cleveland Plain Dealer that the rookie running back (and pivotal part of the Browns’ offense) Trent Richardson was flying to Florida to be evaluated by Dr. James Andrews and that a “minor” surgery was tentatively scheduled for Thursday.
The possible issue that had been reported was loose particles of cartridge that were left as of a result of Richardson’s first surgery on the same knee earlier in the year. If this were to be the case it would be a minor arthroscopic procedure but there were no guarantees until after Dr. Andrews had a chance to look at the rookie back.
After the news hit hearts sank (including my own). Anytime there appears to be a glimmer of hope in Berea it is quickly blasted away by some cosmic freak incident and during this offseason, there have been plenty of scares and issues for the Browns. But losing Richardson (3rd overall selection in the 2012 NFL Draft) for any significant time would be a huge loss to an offense hoping to ride Richardson out of the basement in the NFL offensively.
After Thursday’s practice Head Coach Pat Shurmur gave that fire of optimism a little kindling reporting that Richardson’s minor arthroscopic surgery had been successful and the anointed rookie starting running back would likely be ready to play by week 1. Shurmur comments were brief but optimistic “Trent will make a speedy recovery.” He said after giving the media the news.
Richardson will be expected to miss only two to three weeks and you can pretty much guarantee he will see no action in the Browns final preseason game against the Chicago Bears on August 30th. Our first look at our offensive workhorse Trent Richardson in a “real” football situation will not be until September 9th when the Browns open the regular season against the Philadelphia Eagles.
We may have just dodged a bullet. Or, it could be an omen of things to come. Only time will tell.
