The Cleveland Browns take Weeden with the 22nd pick.

Well with the 22nd pick in the 2012 NFL Draft the Cleveland Browns select Brandon Weeden. So what does that mean for the QB situation in Cleveland?

Selecting a 28-year-old rookie is a statement in itself. This is not a guy who will be patient and wait to develop. This is a guy that if you take him (which the Browns have) you will expect him to compete for that starting job now. The reason for his late start in football was due to his choice to first pursue a career in baseball as he spent five years in the New York Yankee farm system as a pitcher. He later gave up his dreams of getting to the Majors and instead became the signal caller at Oklahoma State.

Weeden broke many of Oklahoma State’s passing records on his way to a 23-3 record in his two seasons as the starting QB. Of course it doesn’t hurt having the nation’s top receiver in Justin Blackmon catching passes for you.

The main concern that scouts and analysts point out regarding Weeden (other than his age), is his lack of mobility. He can also, at times be effected by the rush and at times, has been known to force a pass into coverage.

Weeden will most likely immediately compete with incumbent starter Colt McCoy who struggled under center at times last year. With Weeden, and Richardson now selected in the first round it is clear that Heckert and Holmgren wanted to focus on the offensive side of the ball. The Browns struggled finishing at or near the bottom of every offensive category in the 2011 season.

Is Weeden the answer? What do you think?
