McCoy expects more results

CINCINNATI, OH---Browns rookie quarterback Colt McCoy expects more out of the offense in the final two weeks of the regular season.

CINCINNATI, OH---Browns rookie Colt McCoy returned to the starting line-up in Sunday afternoon’s 19-17 loss to the Cincinnati Bengals at Paul Brown Stadium after missing the last three games due to injury.
In his first start since before Thanksgiving, McCoy completed 19-of-25 attempts for 243 yards and two touchdowns with no interceptions. He finished the game with a 132.6 quarterback rating, the second-highest ever by a Browns rookie. Only Charlie Frye’s 136.7 rating against Jacksonville in 2005 was better.
Despite being sacked four times, McCoy threw multiple touchdown passes in a game for the first time in his young NFL career. His 76 percent completion rate was the highest by a Browns quarterback this season.
“I thought he made good decisions,” said Browns coach Eric Mangini. “This game for us, offensively, is a heavy-pressure team with a lot of different looks. You’d love to be able to throw it away in those situations, but it got a little cloudy in the pocket a couple of those times and I don’t think he could’ve gotten rid of it. I thought that, over the course of the game, he made really good decisions and played pretty efficiently. He protected the football, not really to the point of being (overly) cautious, but he made some smart decisions.”
McCoy was inactive against the Carolina Panthers and at the Miami Dolphins after suffering an injury at the Jacksonville Jaguars on November 21. He served as the team’s third quarterback in last weekend’s loss at the Buffalo Bills before returning to practice on a full-time basis Wednesday.
“I felt pretty good,” McCoy said following the game. “Obviously, if you don’t get a win, there are a lot of things that you think about that you could have done better, things you could have seen. I thought being back I was seeing it just as (well) as I was when I got hurt.”
Though there were many positives in the loss, McCoy knows the team needs to improve on their 2-of-8 third-down conversions and the time possession, which the Browns lost 38:03 to 21:57 against the Bengals.
“We just have to do a better job just staying on the field,” McCoy said. “We can talk about our defense and talk how they gave up a lot of yards rushing, but really a huge part of it is on us. You look at the time of possession and they were on the field almost twice as much as we were. That goes back to us. We’ve got to convert third downs. We’ve got to stay on the field longer. We’ve got to sustain drives.
“I told the guys after the game to just keep fighting,” he added. “I was so proud of the way we kept fighting. We fought back and we got ourselves back in the game. If we get the onside kick, you never know what happens. It shows the character of our football team. We had some opportunities to make plays and we didn’t, but we never quit. We kept fighting to the very end. I think that shows the kind of class these guys have in this locker room. We’ve got two more games to go out there and play our hearts out, compete and get better.”
